Your Golden Eagles Topple the Giants!

Behind a crowd of Oak Hill fans that outnumbered the home Marion crowd the Golden Eagles gave the crowd reason to cheer. January 3rd, 2003 was the last time the Golden Eagles walked out of Bill Green Athletic Arena victorious, and before that 30+ years. But tonight was a different story as the Golden Eagles took the lead on RJ Shugart’s jumper from the elbow to go up 2-0. The Giants came back to take the lead briefly in the 2nd quarter, but then Oak Hill went a little run to take a halftime lead of 37-29. The Giants came out hot in the 3rd quarter eventually making up the 8 point halftime deficit to tie it at 43. But a couple of big three point shots by Jace Tonagel and the Golden Eagles took the lead back for good. The Eagles got up by 12 early in the 4th and held on to win by 7. Defensively the Golden Eagles forced Marion into 20 turnovers. Leading that defensive charge was Luke Elzinga as he was assigned to the Giants top scorer, Jones and did an outstanding job making it difficult for Jones to get going. Luke came away with a team high 6 steals on the night. Another balanced attack on offense as the Eagles put 6 players in the scoring column. Jace Tonagel led the way with 25 points nailing 6 three pointers and 7 free throws. Jace also added 5 assists and 3 rebounds. Will Tonagel finished with 19 points, 6 assists, 4 steals and 4 rebounds. RJ Shugart had 9 points, 2 assists and a rebound. Along with his great defensive effort, Luke Elzinga scored 8 points with 4 boards, and 4 assists to go along with his 6 steals! KD Simmons scored 8 points with 5 rebounds. Jayden Younce hit a huge 3 point shot in the 4th quarter to give the Eagles some breathing room as Marion was on a run for his 3 points, also adding 3 steals and 2 rebounds. The Golden Eagles are now 18-1 and will try to finish the conference season undefeated as they travel to Elwood tomorrow night.
