Close calls have plagued the OHTF Golden Eagles this spring. For the 3rd major championship of the season the Golden Eagle Men battled up to the very end falling just points away from a Championship. Tuesday it was the Marion IHSAA Sectional. Attempting to win their 7th straight Sectional Title the Golden Eagles battled back from outside the Top 3 for most of the meet to have the final events decide the title. Ultimately pre-meet favorite Bluffton won the team title with 94 points. The Golden Eagles were 2nd with 91. Marion was 3rd with 88 while Mississinewa who recently won the Grant 4 and CIC was 4th with 70 and Wabash rounded out the Top 5 in 5th with 68. The Golden Eagles were a combined 18 points away from Grant 4, Conference, and Sectional title. The Golden Eagles had not not hoisted the Sectional Trophy since 2018. On the night the Golden Eagles had just 1 event Champion in Sophomore Jalen Scott who won the 100 Meter Dash in a fast 11.07. An impressive time being run into a headwind. Scott's win in the 100 marked the 9th straight season the Golden Eagles have had at least one event Sectional Champion. The Golden Eagles did collect 4 Sectional Runners Up and ultimately IHSAA Regional Qualifiers in 10 Events. Scott was part of one of those 2nd Place Finishes as he anchored the 4x100 Meter Relay to a runner up spot. Joining him on the relay were Seniors Reese Hernandez, Morshown Cotton, and Seth David. The group ran the 3rd fastest time in program history after posting the 2nd fastest ever at CIC and breaking the CIC Meet Record. Other individual Runner Up placements came from Senior Lance Wyrick in the 800 Meter Run in 1:58 - a Top 10 fastest time in Program History (not his personal best), and Sophomores Luke Elzinga in the Long Jump along with Kyle Brower in the Pole Vault. The Golden Eagles posted 3 additional Top 3 Regional Qualifier placements from the 4x800 Meter Relay and Senior Drew Elzinga in the 110 Meter and 300 Meter Hurdles. The relay team consisted of Wyrick with Senior Classmate Owen Middlesworth along with Juniors Corban Tippey and Caden Myers. The squad posted an impressive 8:14, a drop of nearly 25 seconds off their season best and a Top 10 All Time Program Mark. The Elzinga brothers along with Wyrick and Cotton took 4th in the 4x400 Meter Relay but will receive a callback to the Regional. Also receiving a callback was Tippey who took 5th in the 1600 Meter Run in a time of 4:36 - a Top 20 All Time Program Mark. Just missing callbacks in 4th Place were Senior Micah McKinney in the 300 Meter Hurdles and Junior Thane Jones in the Shot Put. Both had big step up performances to help the Golden Eagles close the gap late in the meet. The Golden Eagles now compete in next Thursday's (May 29th) IHSAA Regional at Fort Wayne Carroll with trips to the IHSAA State Finals on the line.
